About 83,000 (91,000 units were previously recalled on March 30, 2016). In addition, 10,000 were sold in Canada and 5,000 in Mexico.
Description:
This expanded recall involves Panasonic lithium-ion battery packs installed in 41 models of Toshiba Satellite laptops, including the Satellite models affected by the March 2016 recall. Toshiba has expanded the number of battery packs to include those sold between June 2011 and November 2016. The battery packs also were sold separately and installed by Toshiba as part of a repair. Battery packs included in this recall have part numbers that begin with G71C (G71C*******). Part numbers are printed on the battery pack. A complete list of battery pack part numbers included in this recall can be found on the firm’s website at

Incidents/Injuries:
The firm has received five reports of the battery pack overheating and melting, including one additional report since the first recall announcement. No injuries have been reported.
Remedy:
Consumers should immediately go to the firm’s
website and click on the battery pack utility link in the first shadowed box on the page. Consumers also can perform a manual check using the laptop and battery pack’s model, part and serial numbers. If it is part of the recall, consumers should power off the laptop, remove the battery and follow the instructions to obtain a free replacement battery pack. Until a replacement battery pack is received, consumers should use the laptop by plugging into AC power only.

Office Depot, Staples and other electronics stores nationwide, and online at Toshibadirect.com and other websites from June 2011 through November 2016 for between $500 and $1,000 for the laptop and between $70 and $130 for the battery pack.

Expansion of March 30, 2016 recall.
Joint recall with Health Canada, the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (US CPSC), Mexico's Consumer Protection Federal Agency (PROFECO), and Toshiba Client Solutions Canada Ltd.

Product description
This expanded recall involves additional lithium-ion battery pack models not included in the previous recall.
The recalled Panasonic lithium-ion battery packs came pre-installed on various models of Toshiba Portege, Satellite, Satellite Pro, and Tecra laptops. These battery packs were also sold as accessories and used as replacement parts for laptops under warranty during the mentioned time period. Consumers can use the Toshiba Product Information Tool on the Toshiba website to automatically detect and display their laptop model and serial number and then check whether their battery pack is affected.
Hazard identified
The battery packs can overheat, posing a potential burn or fire hazard.
As of January 4, Toshiba Client Solutions Canada Limited has received no reports of burn or fire incidents or injuries. In the United States, the company has received 5 reports of the battery pack overheating and melting, with no reports of injuries.
Number sold
Approximately 10,029 Panasonic battery packs were contained in Toshiba laptop computers or sold separately as accessories or replacement parts in Canada.
Approximately 174,000 were sold in the United States, of which 91, 000 were included in the previous recall and approximately 5000 were sold in Mexico.
Time period sold
The affected products were sold in Canada from June 2011 through November 2016, and in United States from June 2011 and November 2016.
